Moaning Cavern Rappel

Guided tours through crystalline caves, fascinating treks deep into Mother Lode mines, and challenging adventure expeditions are provided daily in several local underground attractions. Three caves and two gold mines offer an incredible opportunity to see the incredible geology of the Sierra Nevada foothills from the inside.

 

Moaning Cavern holds the largest vertical chamber in a public cavern that you can see in California. In fact, it's so big, it could hold the entire Statue of Liberty! See massive natural crystalline formations. Walk in via the historic spiral staircase (234 stairs down and then up again) or rappel in by rope 165 feet. Caving expeditions also available by reservation. Above ground enjoy the thrill of racing the 1500-foot zip lines, race up the custom climbing tower, pan for gold and mine for gemstones. Open daily, year round.

 

California Cavern walk tourCalifornia Cavern State Historic Landmark was discovered during the Gold Rush and was the first show cave opened in California. Hour long family walk tours meander through passageways into larger chambers with beautiful crystalline formations in this horizontally oriented cavern. Enjoy wild caving expeditions from 2-4 hours by reservation in advance. No experience is necessary and all equipment is provided.

 

Mercer Caverns is world famous for the rare Aragonite flos ferri, celebrated its one hundredth year of discovery and operation on September 1, 1985. It is the longest continually operating commercial caverns in the state of California. Vertically oriented, the cave contains 440 stairs. Open daily through the summer, check website for winter hours.
